Every Year, during the first half of January, the “Dontosai” (どんと祭) festival is held here in Sendai!
In this ancient Shinto festival, thousands of men and women march half naked through the main streets of the City of Trees heading to the “Ōsaki Hachimangū” (大崎八幡宮) Shrine.
These brave people walk for kilometers despite the temperature in January being often below freezing! But don’t worry because at the Shrine, a huge bonfire, made to burn the New Year decorations, waits to warm them up!
People from all the city gather at Ōsaki Hachimangū to burn the decorations, pray for a lucky and healthy year and to watch the spectacle of the first matsuri (祭) of the year.
This is definitely a festival you need to see while staying in our Guest House Hot inn Sendai Nagamachi.
